Ureteral papilla jets
This isn’t rocket science but nice pics all the same. From a young dog with recurrent UTIs whom we screened for ectopic ureters.
….they weren’t ectopic. The jet from the right ureter enters obliquely from below and the left one is firing from above.
Although one of the best texts does say that ‘..ureters can’t usually be seen entering the bladder unless dilated’, I would normally expect to be able to see them. With a linear probe at 10-13MHz you can see the waves of muscular contraction propelling the urine down and out into the bladder lumen. This is from a cat:
You can also see them without Doppler although it depends a bit on the relative concentrations of urine in the bladder and that entering from the ureter. And on machine capabilities and settings.
