Metritis in a bitch in oestrus
Just an unusual case. An acutely poorly, pyrexic pug who was in season at the time. As far as we know no mating involved.
On abdominal ultrasonography, working from cranial to caudal the first abnormality was localised abdominal fat inflammation around the ovaries:
The uterine horns are abnormally hypoechoic and contain a little turbid content (in this view the colon lies immediately adjacent to the uterus and accounts for one set of wall layers):
This is the uterine bifurcation:
And the cervix and cranial vagina:
She responded completely to prompt antibiotic therapy.
The interesting aspect is the degree of inflammation despite lack of uterine content. This isn’t a typical dioestrus endometritis with cystic hyperplasia.
