Grapiprant reaches the market in USA: a new generation of analgesics

I’m sure this marks turning point for us. It will presumably come to the UK in due course (in fact it already features on the VMD special import site as an option for import from the USA).
Grapiprant is the first commercially available piprant: a specific EP4 prostaglandin receptor antagonist.

To quote this paper:
‘Safety studies in laboratory dogs have demonstrated an excellent safety profile, and a wide safety margin, and this has been confirmed in two large field effectiveness studies in dogs with OA . The relative lack of toxic effects with grapiprant compared to those that have been reported in dogs treated with COX-inhibiting NSAIDs is consistent with grapiprant’s unique mechanism of action’
Specifically, there would seem be reasonable grounds for thinking it a promising option in individuals with a history of GI ulceration, previous NSAID intolerance or renal insufficiency. My understanding is that we do not currently have good RCT evidence to support the use of either tramadol, gabapentin or paracetamol in dogs. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
