Cavitated hepatic lymph nodes associated with previous pancreatitis in dogs
This is an observation as yet unsubstantiated but interesting nonetheless.
This kind of change is only seen regularly in the hepatic nodes. I haven’t yet had the opportunity to do histopath on any but I’m not aware of any published reports of this phenomenon. My personal theory is that these changes are a sequel to proteolytic or lipolytic enzyme assault on the nodes. Hepatic nodes certainly seem to be responsible for draining the pancreas.
Hello!
I have made the same observation in a few of mý patients regarding these cavitary lesions, i’ve mostly seen them in the hepatic lymph nodes, rarely in the pancreatic lymph node, and never in any other. I thought it was related to liver disease, but your theory makes a lot more sense. I looked for literature on the subject but only found your blog, if you’ve found any studies or have had histopatholy results since, i would much appreciate if you send me a link.
Thank you for your attention,
Kamila
Hi Kamila,
No, nothing new to report….but I haven’t changed my mind. i saw one today: mini-schnauzer chronic pancreatitis, hypoechoic lacunae in hepatic nodes
All the best
Roger
